The best parts of the holiday season for me?

1. Watching Cassie on the Merry-Go-Round at the Phoenix Zoo during ZooLights! (she loved it, her dad got a bit sick to his stomach LOL ) and seeing pictures of their Christmas tree --bare on the bottom half where she kept taking off the ornaments and bringing them to her parents!

2. Holding Emerson at church on Christmas Eve, and seeing her wonder in the candles and everyone singing Silent Night. And then she signed "more, more".

3. Seeing the big smile on Eli's face as he made a basket in his brand new little Tykes basketball hoop. He looked around at us, smiling like he had just won March Madness!

4. Getting a picture text of Evalynn with her brand new PINK knit cap and mittens, opening her new doll house, and a phone call later with her saying "I love you"

5. An early morning call from Camron, "thank you Gram for the ventriloquist doll. I was just wondering last night if Santa would bring me one, cuz I forgot to tell him"

I only have pics of "my" Christmas morning (silly other kids who aren't prompt sending me pictures )

It was a great morning... and evening before.

oh...we got Marc a garden hose, as one of his gifts.... don't laugh, he loved it.

Zoolights in Phoenix

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, we braved the cold (hahaha, that's a joke, since we were in Phoenix. We had blizzards and record breaking cold at home in Winnemucca, but a very nice warm holiday down south. Altho everyone there thought they were freezing ) we went to the Phoenix Zoo, with our son Luke, his wife Mara and daughter Cassandra, to see....

Of course, there is excitement in trying to find gloves (where did we put them last spring?), boots, snow shovels, ice melt...

I was up at 5:00a.m.

You can tell the difference in color as the sun comes up--dawn to early morning.

Beer Tasting Party!

Last night we got together with old friends and had a beer tasting party. All of those invited were asked to bring a certain kind of beer and an appetizer and to come and watch the Boise State/Fresno football game on the big screen TV. It turned out to be an embarrassing football game to watch if you were rooting for Fresno, but since none of us were, it was a good night.

I wanted to take pictures of old barns, so we took a little drive. I think it's one of the most beautiful places ever.

BUT....just FYI...for those of you who are going next summer. Don't say "lets go to Hurricane Creek" (with long vowel sounds) you have to say Huricun Crick.

I thought you might like to know that. I know I would, because of all the people who come into the chamber and pronounce Winnemucca AND Nevada wrong. :~)

They do a lot of bronze work there in Joseph. There are a couple of foundries that you can tour. One of them did the famous "bulls" for Merrill Lynch (which is somewhere in New York...the statues...in front of the ML building)

And Joseph has many bronze statues on street corners of their main street.

Labor Day Weekend part 1

On Labor Day Weekend, Rich and I took a short holiday for ourselves. We went to our family cabin at Wallowa Lake in Oregon.

Early in the morning my favorite thing to do is get up and walk down by the lake. One morning...not this past weekend, there was steam coming up off the lake, and I sooo wanted a picture of it, but of course I didn't have my camera with me, so now...I always have my camera.

This is my favorite tree. Yes, I know it's dead, but it's been here for years and years...and I like to take it's picture.

I like the way the water looks at dawn...and the shadow and silhouette of the trees.

And you can just see the sun hitting the tops of the hills.

That guy out there? That's Rich. He sometimes ( always) walks way far in front of me....he isn't as enamoured of picture taking as I am.

There aren't very many people out walking at 6:00am.

There is more at noon time.

(I took this from the car....Rich was driving back to the cabin after we had lunch in town)

Anyone who know me well, knows when I eat Chinese food, I have to use chopsticks. I don't know why, I just do. And I'm not very good at it. I guess I just like the whole experience. I do mangage to eat my whole meal.

(it kind of annoys me when my friends won't even TRY to use a chopstick )

Laura's son Thomas, who is in the Army, is stationed in Japan. His family is with him.

When we lived in Los Banos, my boys used to play with the neighborhood kids, and this little boy named Jacob lived right next door to us. Jacob and his brother Nathaniel were regulars playing at our house...and in our garage.

I remember the boys playing poker with smarties.

And then one day, my good friend Judy called and said, "I think you know Stacy's new boyfriend"

And the rest is history!

I really need more pictures of all of you.
Want to know a secret weird thing about me? I don't like swimming in the ocean AT ALL. I love the beach, but I don't like to get in the water above my knees. It scares me.

And the Stones....well, I mean, THE OTHER Stones, the Mike and Meghan Stones, took a Mission Trip. Not to Glide Memorial Methodist church in SF, but it's 4th grade in CA! Which means a "mission" report and CA History.
They took Nate to visit a mission in Santa Cruz, and then took a picnic to the beach.

Nik took the opportunity to finish her book on the way to Reno to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D!

Jenna kept me company while playing Gameboy. She also read to me from our book club pick for March "The Help." It was a fun trip, and I was planning to take pictures of us with the Alice signage I was expecting at the theater, but there wasn't any! I think film posters may be becoming a thing of the past.

Obsessive Backyard Birding

My newest addition to the family - this little guy is my most frequent visitor to my hummingbird feeders. He hovers just in front of me as if to say hello when I sit out there.

And then this guy shows up with a couple of buddies. I was so excited, because he is different than what's been visiting my back yard - one of them very bright yellow. He proceeds to start picking at my bulb lights and then kept landing on the hummingbird feeder.

He acted like he was drinking from it and twice knocked down one of the feeders. I was so mad!

Our first camping trip with the girls at Pit Taylor Dam, Rye Patch July 4th weekend. We were treated to a beautiful sunset the first night after it rained very lightly.

Still Day 4

After the Swamp Monster scare.... my dad and I went to the new branch library in Kennewick.
YES... I lead an exciting life!!

There are now 2....count 'em....two libraries in the town I grew up in.

Look at their "return" slots. In Winnemucca we have a "mail box" where EVERYTHING goes...except the media. You have to take that inside.

This is how they do the "reserved" books. They just line them up and you go and get your own. In Winnemucca, we call and they are kept in the back room for a few days until you can make it down.
Obviously we don't trust people to pick up their own book requests like this. LOL

And checking out? Holy Moly.
There is a big sign. And then.... you can do it yourself! You can just check yourself out.
It's express. The libraries are going express, just like the grocery stores.

And that was Day 4.....
I did not take pictures of our trip to Costco nor my sister-in-law, Sylvia, my mom and me, scrapbooking in the evening.
I probably should have. (cuz I know you find my life exciting)

My Town continued

When I was a kid, we were able to roam about our towns more than the kids of today are. We could be gone for hours and our mother's didn't worry about us.
Even when I had kids, I didn't let them roam for hours , or wait, I didn't let Luke or Dustin roam for hours.... I was AFRAID, but Marcus? Well, he did roam. He was my 3rd child and we lived in a small town, but none of my kids, no matter how far and wide a let them or didn't let them roam, had to deal with.....THE SWAMP MONSTER! The dreaded Swamp Monster, who put fear in the hearts and minds of every kid within a 5 mile radius of Zintel Canyon.
I lost my shoe once in a quick sand bog in Zintel Canyon....we think the Swamp Monster actually reached up and grabbed it and sucked it down into the muddy quagmire. It was a scary place.
I can't believe my mom let me play in it. For hours nonetheless!! Didn't she know? About the Swamp Monster?

Zintel Canyon is a....canyon about a half a mile from the house I grew up in. It begins at 7th street and ends at 27th street.
Sometime between when I was a kid worried about (but not enough to stay away from) the Swamp Monster and now, the parks and rec department in Kennewick has made the canyon into a "natural" park or greenway".
It is still very spooky at 6:00 a.m. when no one, NO ONE is around.
I got a bit spooked....as I knew there could be a serial killer lurking in the swamp.
Serial Killer or Swamp Monster. One was out to get me!!

Day #4 of my trip up north
I took an early morning walk thru the Home of the Swamp Monster, aka Zintel Canyon.

I approach the 7th street entrance. See those tennis courts across the street? Ahhh...my boyfriend Rich Stone (and Theda and her boyfriend Steve Bartlett) used to play tennis there early in the mornings.

But I am confused....where is this "trail?"

This is the trail I find....okay. A Sidewalk. I'm good. I'm not scared.

The sidewalk ends and a trail begins.... yikes....I turn around and this is what I'm leaving....

And this is what I'm headed into.

What fricking "greenway"? It looks like I'm headed into the home of the Swamp Monster.

Oh look, here is a bridge... a bridge over the muddy bog...which now looks like a clear running stream. Hmmm.....Interesting. I'll go over the bridge.

And what is this? A black topped path?

And concrete stools by the stream? Obviously, I didn't take the right path to begin with. LOL

And even benches.... benches all along the blacktopped path.

I'll sit and enjoy the quietness of the swamp. WAIT, I hear something..... THE SWAMP MONSTER...no...SERIAL KILLER....no.... bird in tree?

Hurry!! Run down the black topped path, quick as I could.... to the....sign that says "Trail Head". LOL

Ah, I'm safe...safe from the Swamp Monster AND the serial killer of Zintel Canyon. (who has yet to kill anyone... but I didn't want to be the first.)

Cherrie Lou Who said that my chances of running into a serial killer are great than that of running into the Swamp Monster.

I'm not so sure.... ????

She carries a tazer. Or a gun. at all walking times. I probably should have.

Now I'll walk up the hill towards home.

This is the house I grew up in. My bedroom is at the end of the house...you can see the window thru the juniper bush. My boyfriend Rich Stone came to see me and "tapped" at my window to kiss me good night, once. Ahhhh....

This is in my parents back yard. You really don't see telephone and electrical wires like that anymore, except in old neighborhoods.

Rich and I are always amazed by the wires. Even tho they've always been there. The squirrels run across them all the time.

My Town

I really fell behind.... in telling you about my week in Washington.

Day 3.
The day LeAnne (my practical sister....not that she's all that practical..LOL.... but Rich's sisters are the closest thing I have to sisters....so they are practically my sisters )
I'm really lucky that way.

I sent some of you a picture of this already.
My dad is having some health issues and Rich's mom had a stint (her 5th) put in her artery while I was up north.
so on day 3, LeAnne and I went to see "Up", which we loved.
They gave us 3-d glasses, but I understand they don't always. Here in Winnemcucca, they don't give them out.
BUT I thought it would be great if I took a picture of LeAnne and I in our 3-D glasses...... so here we are in the bathroom at the movie theater, trying to get a picture of ourselves.
The bathroom really was a good place to be, since we laughed ourselves silly and almost peed our pants.
We needed some comic relief!! And we got it. (in ourselves)

We (Sarah, Aaron, John and I) to see this w/o 3D for John's bday. It was a great movie.

Up North continued

Day #2
After going to see the dermatologist for my mom's skin cancer---which she had removed 7 weeks ago and it still isn't' healing, we I took a walk thru a "demonstration" garden. It was by the new library. Kennewick (the town I grew up in) now has 2 libraries.
The demonstration garden was a really neat little walk (right by a park), where they had TONS of roses. Beautiful roses...and I am not a huge rose fan.
The garden also had demonstrations of "butterfly gardens" and "Children's Gardens".

It was just a nice little afternoon stroll.....

My trip up north.....

I just found out!! They are going to tear down the back half of the first shopping center I ever went to!
I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Washington. There were "3" cities connected by bridges over rivers. Where the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers all meet and mingle.
I love where I grew up. I love the memories I have of growing up.
One of those memories was going to Richland to the Uptown shopping center. This was before there was ever a "mall" built in the Tri-cities, in the 1960's. We would go to the UPTOWN shopping center to Newberry's, the old 5 and dime store.
(whatever happened to "5 and dime stores?" and....what did 5 and dime mean? ) They had a soda fountain. (sigh) and a pet section.
The Uptown shopping center was the home of JCPenneys (each town had their own) until the mall was built and they closed down each small individual store.

And....the Tahitian Room. oooooohhhhhhhhhhhh.....fancy, mysterious, grown-up cocktail place, that it was. It seemed very "Frank Sinatra-ish" to me--- very "Rat Pack-ish". (It's still there...I took a picture. I have a thing about signs)
I have fond memories of cocktails, ice clinking in glasses, women in cat eye glasses, cigarettes with lip-stick marks, laughter and "dancing"...yes, dancing. My parents had "dance" parties in the basement, where they and their friends got together and had cocktails and dance parties.
My brother and I would sit on the stairs and listen to their music and their laughter until we were shooed off to bed.
I have fond memories of Chinese restaurants too. I guess we must have eaten out at Chinese restaurants a lot. They were fancy and mysterious and curious. There was always a lot of velvet and hidden cubbies/rooms in the restaurants of the 1960's.

And....and...and THE SPUDNUT SHOP. A donut shop, where they make the donuts from potato flour. A bit of History on the Spudnuts, click here.

We were a nuclear town...or towns, as it was.
There are still a few remaining logos from the 60's and 70's haning around.....some things are still named "Atomic" (the Atomic Lanes was our bowling alley) and the Atom was a big logo of the Uptown Shopping Center.

Desert Walking...again

I stood and did a "360" photo shot. hahahahaa I turned, and snapped, turned and snapped, turned and...well you get the picture.

I am making this post a "My world Tuesday" post... it is the neatest way to see pictures of other's "worlds". Click the link on my side bar to see others.....

On Saturday morning, I took a walk thru the Community Garden. I always like to go see what the "community" is up too...and to see how the Garden takes shape and how it is every changing. A few years ago, this was nothing more than an empty lot owned by the City.

Our little Community Garden folk are very active and they are now officially on the Nevada Trail System. They do have a nice little trail thru there.

Don't forget that this is Northern Nevada....we had snow last week. It's getting there.
I'll go back in a month and you won't be able to tell it's the same trail-community garden.
Once the veggies begin to grow, there is a "Farmers Market" there at the garden every Thursday. I like to stop by and get fresh, fresh veggies in the summer.

A Morning Stroll is Good for the Soul

Come along with us as we walk the high mountail desert trails of Northen Nevada...
There is an artist in town, a friend of ours, Teddy Swecker , and for the past couple of years, on her morning walk in the desert, she has been stopping, taking her time and using litter that people have left behind to make, little "objects de art" along the way.

She takes nothing into the desert with her, excpet a little paint once in awhile, but uses what others have left behind...litter, trash, rocks and wood.
One of her trails is about a mile long, and this is the walk my friends and I took today.This is what we saw......

This post "Desert Walk" is going to be long, so maybe it would be best done in parts..

Regents Meeting

My friend and Great Basin College (GBC) Student Government Association (SGA) Senator, Ilona Somers traveled to the Regents Meeting last Thursday and Friday. I neglected to get a picture of her and I, but managed to take a picture of my dinner Thursday night. Just shows you where my priorities are! It was a spicy scallop and shrimp dish. We also had some fried veggie appetizer that was equally wonderful. Yum-o!!

Students were encouraged to walk designated tracks that day, but due to the weather and general apathy, only a few showed up.
